New figures reveal huge disparity in housebuilding

New figures have revealed huge disparities in City Hall housebuilding during Sadiq Khan's first term as Mayor of London, with more homes built in Tower Hamlets than in eleven other boroughs.

The Greater London Authority statistics show that more than half of the 34,659 homes built by the Mayor in the past five years are in just eight boroughs. Richmond upon Thames, Kingston upon Thames, and Havering saw the fewest new homes, with only 811 completed between them under Khan.

City Hall built 4306 homes in Tower Hamlets alone, more than the bottom eleven boroughs. Combined with Newham (2709) and Ealing (2209), the three boroughs saw more homes completed in the period than seventeen other boroughs.

The Mayor’s housing record has already come under fire after it emerged that his predecessor Boris Johnson completed nearly twice as many homes (62,387) in his first five years as Mayor than Khan built during his first term (34,659).

In his first term, the Mayor received £4.82 billion from the government to start building 116,000 homes by 2023. Khan plans to use a further £4 billion of government which he received this year to start building an additional 35,000 homes by 2026.

London-wide Assembly Member Andrew Boff blasted Sadiq Khan for effectively "abandoning" large swathes of London struggling with the housing crisis. He called on Sadiq Khan to use the £9 billion of government funding to build homes more family-sized homes to deliver homes in London's suburbs, not just a few boroughs.

Andrew Boff AM, GLA Conservative Housing Spokesman, commented: "It's no wonder that only a few boroughs have benefited from City Hall's housebuilding programme under Sadiq Khan. His plan to build small one and two bedroom flats only suits a few boroughs, leaving much of London without the family-sized homes they desperately need.

"Unless Sadiq Khan's housing programme starts to deliver family-sized homes, he risks overdeveloping a few boroughs and abandoning large swathes of London.

"Many Londoners will feel abandoned by Sadiq Khan. Not only has he built significantly fewer homes than Boris achieved in his first five years as Mayor, but he’s also failing to build the right homes in the right places”.

"In his second term, Khan must pick up the pace and build the homes Londoners desperately need. That means more family-sized homes, not just small flats. He has the money and no excuses. Londoners expect him to deliver."
