Fresh data has revealed that London Mayor Sadiq Khan increased his own office budget by 60 percent since his election in 2016.
Figures obtained by London-wide Assembly Member Susan Hall show that £3.8 million was spent on the Mayor’s office in 2015/2016, but after year-on-year increases the amount has now surged to £6 million.
Khan said that the dramatic increase was due in part to the Night Czar, Amy Lamé, being given a fixed-term post within the Mayor’s Office. Lamé has been criticised in the past for posting offensive tweets about prominent Conservative politicians and even the Queen. Questions were raised when her salary more than doubled at the end of last year.
This comes as the overall staff bill at the GLA has rocketed by £9 million since 2016.
Commenting, Susan Hall AM said: “The Mayor constantly pleads poverty and complains that he doesn’t have sufficient funding to get to grips with London’s problems, yet miraculously he has managed to find millions more for his own office.
“If Khan genuinely wanted to serve ‘all Londoners as an active Mayor’, he would have spent this money on combating London’s crime epidemic rather than on his own political operation. £2.2 million would pay for 36 extra police officers.
“Khan’s claim that he is ‘committed to securing value for money’ shows he is taking Londoners for fools. The Mayor has a track record of shelling out taxpayers’ money on waste and pet projects while failing to get crime down, invest in transport infrastructure and build more homes”.
